Why Being Patient Sometimes Feels Like Losing

Illustration of a modest Muslim woman in contemplation, holding a cup of tea, with the text: 'Why Choosing Peace Sometimes Feels Like Losing. But in the Qur’an, That Silence Might Be Your Proof of Strength.'

Have you ever walked away from a conversation replaying every word in your head?

You stayed calm. You chose silence.
But deep down... it stings.

Maybe someone made a sly comment about your modesty.
Mocked your choice to avoid gossip.
Or rolled their eyes when you passed on something that didn’t align with your faith.

You smiled.
Held your peace.
Tried to remember that Allah sees.

But later, when you were alone, that moment played on repeat.
And you wondered:
“Did I do the right thing by staying quiet?”

You're not the only one.

Even the Prophet ﷺ—our beloved, our guide, the most dignified of all humans—was mocked.

They said he was mad. (Astagfirullah!)
Delusional.
That his message made no sense.

And how did Allah respond?

“By the favor of your Lord, you are not mad… and indeed, you are of great moral character.”
(Surah Al-Qalam, 68:2–4)

SubhanAllah.
Allah didn’t ask him to defend himself.
He reminded him who he was—with gentleness, not fire.

Silence can be sabr in action.

There’s strength in silence—not when it comes from fear, but from faith.

Because Allah knows when your heart aches but your tongue chooses grace.
He sees when you could clap back—but don’t.
And He knows that adab takes more strength than anger.

So don’t let those moments of restraint feel like failure.
They’re a reflection of your inner character—just like the Prophet ﷺ was praised for his.

Silence in pain can be sabr in motion. And sabr never goes unseen.
